Super 30 Movie Review - Education, Equality, and the Real Hero India Needed

Super 30 (2019), directed by Vikas Bahl, stars Hrithik Roshan as real-life mathematician Anand Kumar. Based on Kumar’s free coaching program for underprivileged IIT aspirants, the film earned over ₹200 crore worldwide and features Mrunal Thakur as the female lead. It highlights the power of education and social change.

In a society where education is sometimes regarded as the ultimate instrument for empowerment yet remains a luxury for many, Super 30 serves as both a wake-up call and a tribute.  The film is directed by Vikas Bahl and stars Hrithik Roshan in a career-defining performance. It is based on the true tale of Anand Kumar, a mathematician from Bihar who revolutionized coaching for poor pupils.

While movie may use Bollywood dramatization techniques, Super 30 never deviates from its central message: "genius exists everywhere — all it needs is a chance."

The Story That Had to Be Told

Anand Kumar (Hrithik Roshan), a talented student from a poor background, achieves international renown after solving a challenging mathematical problem that is published in a British publication.  Despite being offered admission to Cambridge, his hopes are dashed owing to poverty.  Forced to abandon his ambitions, he begins instructing at a prestigious institute catering to the affluent.

But Anand is troubled by the kids he left behind, those who were brilliant but lacked privilege.  His conscience prevails over ease, and he launches "Super 30," a free coaching program for 30 gifted youngsters from underserved communities.  The rest of the film is a gripping journey through their hardships, change, and eventual triumph over all difficulties.

This is not just a film — it's a movement wrapped in narrative.

Hrithik Roshan: The Star Who Stepped Aside for the Story

Hrithik Roshan disappears into the character of Anand Kumar, sacrificing his usual glamor for sincerity.  His dialect, body language, and even his silences reflect the struggles of a man fighting both the system and his own concerns.

Some critics have questioned the accuracy of his accent or the skin tone chosen to fit the Bihari locale — but in terms of storytelling, Hrithik carries the film's emotional weight with authenticity and passion.  It is possibly one of his most emotionally charged performances to date.

A System That Needs Fixing

Super 30's criticism of the Indian school system is direct and not veiled. It highlights the commercialization of coaching facilities, exploitative tactics that prey on innocents' hopes, and the disparity between the wealthy and the poor.

However, the film does more than criticize; it also provides hope.  Anand's model demonstrates what inclusive education could look like.  It demonstrates that change does not necessarily have to come from the top.  Sometimes one instructor, one idea, and a group of 30 kids is enough to spark a revolution.

For Indian viewers who witnessed the cutthroat competitiveness of entrance tests and the desperation of those who are left out, the film is both mournful and empowering.

Real struggle, real stakes! 

Super 30 stands out since it is based on real-life difficult circumstances.  These students face more than simply mathematics; they also face starvation, mockery, caste discrimination, and systemic indifference.  Their successes seem earned.  Their pain, concerns, and smiles are genuine.

The movie skillfully combines this seriousness with moments of laughter - a joke shared during class, a brief celebration after a question is answered, and a stolen moment of pride.  These aren't just cinematic moments; they're profoundly human.

Music & Cinematography: Supportive, Not Distracting 

Ajay-Atul's music complements the story in subtle ways.  The song "Jugraafiya" provides a lighthearted break, while "Niyam Ho" becomes a hymn of resilience.  Anay Goswamy's cinematography depicts the earthy textures of Patna, the chaotic energy of slums, and the confined but exhilarating classroom where glory is shaped.

Thankfully, the visuals and background score never overpower the plot; instead, they flow with it.

Super 30 isn't a perfect movie.  It occasionally veers toward melodrama, and the pacing in the second half could have been tighter.  However, its heart is in the right place, and the impact is apparent.

It reminds us that education is not charity, but rather justice.  It challenges viewers not only to applaud Anand Kumar's story, but also to consider why we continue to live in a culture where such stories are the exception rather than the norm.

Super 30 is more than simply a movie for educators, students, parents, lawmakers, and anybody else in India who still believes in equal opportunity.  This is one to remember.
